Groundbreaking Breast cancer detection: The Discovering Hands Method (dh)
When it comes to breast cancer, early detection can mean the difference. Pretac, a Swiss non-profit association champions the innovative method.
Developed in 2006, in Germany, by Dr Frank Hoffmann, gynecologist, this method leverages the enhanced tactile sensitivity of visually impaired women to perform in-depth, systematic breast examinations. It offers key advantages and do not replace imaging techniques like mammography:
● Small Tumour Detection: Manual Tactile Examiners (MTEs) trained can identify masses 6-8 mm and detect up to 30% more than standard clinical breast exams
● Cost-Effective exam for women under 50, over 74, or those with limited access to traditional screenings
● Between traditional Screenings
Rigorous Training and Expertise. After 10-month training programme (600 hours, internships in Hospital and gynecologist practices), MTEs can detect anomalies with their heightened sense of touch, a skill rooted in neuroplasticity and developed through practice. Any abnormalities palpated are described in a report and analyzed by the gynecologist, who will decide whether further examination is indicated.
An Inclusive Approach
The dh Academy certified the first MTE in Switzerland who now performs tactile breast exams in practices and enterprises across Geneva and Lausanne.
Looking Ahead
WHO estimates that breast cancer rates will continue to rise, with a 21% increase in mortality by 2030.
