Prix de Rome is the main prize in the Netherlands for young artists and architects (until 35 years old). In 2011 Prix de Rome will focus on visual arts. An international jury selected a longlist of 10 artists, and 4 of them are nominated to develop new work at the Rijksakademie Residencies.
In May 2011 the Prix de Rome exhibition opens at SMART Project Space. The new work will be judged again, and a winner will be selected in June (first prize: €45.000, second prize €20.000 and two basic prizes of €10.000).
Prix de Rome has a long history, and is founded in the Netherlands by Lodewijk Napoleon in 1808. During that time, the first prize was a journey to Rome, where artists could study the fine arts. These days Prix de Rome has the aim to trace talent and identify trends in art and architecture.
Prix de Rome is organized and facilitated by Rijkakademie voor beeldende kunsten.
