About Project Hospice Nepal

Tragically, over 90% of people in Nepal with advanced cancer and other diseases die without sufficient pain relief or other palliative care. As a result, they often endure very painful deaths, usually at home, causing their families immense suffering as well. Despite a population of c. 30 million, Nepal currently only has 4 dedicated hospices where terminally ill adults are able to pass away with minimum pain and with dignity. There is no such facility for children in the entire country. Contrast that to the UK, with a population of just over double Nepal's but with 220 hospices and 58 facilities dedicated to children. Moreover 100% of the terminally ill in the UK have access to painkilling opioids. In Nepal, tragically only 9% do. We are seeking to raise £1m to build a new 25 bed, palliative care hospice, with at least three of the beds reserved for children. We have recently acquired suitable land in Kathmandu thanks to some very generous donations from both within Nepal and overseas. The new facility will help alleviate the suffering of people throughout Nepal by enabling more people to receive treatment in Kathmandu itself and by providing palliative care training for healthcare workers from other regions of the country, including remote rural areas. With the ongoing pandemic, we urgently need your help to continue our project. Like the rest of world, Nepal has been hit hard by Covid-19 and the need for palliative care has never been greater. Project Hospice Nepal is a joint Nepalese/UK/NZ initiative through the INCTR Challenge Fund (UK Charity number 1079181)
