Project Mercy, Inc., a not-for-profit organization, ministry’s focus is “to renew the heart of a nation by plucking out poverty.” The organization has evolved its model in rural Ethiopia to address the root causes of poverty through integrated and holistic community development built on a foundation of active participation and contribution by the communities served. Based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Project Mercy is a registered 501(c)(3) organization under the leadership of a 9-person board. Within the past two-and-a-half decades, Project Mercy's development efforts - coupled with the help of Project Mercy volunteers, donors, and staff has directed the construction of schools, a state-of-the-art hospital, skills training classes, agricultural development programs, clean water delivery, all-season roads and countless other initiatives. However, we have learned that we cannot just educate children if the only outcome is to make them discontented with limited job opportunities. We cannot just treat symptoms of malnutrition in the clinic if we don’t improve food security and agriculture production. We cannot just teach good hygiene practices if people still need to bathe and drink from the same contaminated water supply. Our initiatives, developed in partnership with our communities, are integrated, holistic, and are committed to long-term, multi-generational transformation. The common theme that will be present in all communities served is one that engages the community, takes a holistic approach and aims for long-term impact. Our mission is to transform how people live and think and build strong, self-sufficient communities in Ethiopia and beyond through new knowledge, better health, sustainable food sources and strengthened character for all people as a living example of the love of Jesus Christ. Our vision is to renew the heart of a nation by freeing people from physical and spiritual poverty.
