Project Sankofa

Project Sankofa is a research-based nonprofit transforming education for Black students and educators in racially isolated communities across California. We provide culturally relevant programs, mentorship, and systemic support to foster Black academic success and educator retention. Through our Next Black Educator Workforce (NBEW) initiative, in partnership with the University of the Pacific, we are actively building a Black Educator Pipeline to recruit, train, support, and retain Black middle and high school teachers. We are committed to cultivating the future of Black educators who are prepared to confidently lead their classrooms. Our 3-year plan addresses the impact of Black family dispersal across the state and its effects on school climate, student belonging, and representation. We believe thriving, connected Black communities begin with strong, representative schools—and we’re here to make that happen.
