Project SeaBox is an initiative launched to drive innovation within tropical seaweed farming by offering an alternative to climate vulnerable and m2 inefficient long-line cultivation. That alternative is the SeaBox.
The SeaBox allows seaweed farmers to cultivate seaweed in a 1m deep submerged cage - and when fully utilized farm oysters and mussels for an integrated multi-trophic approach that can buffer incomes and improve marine ecosystems. The SeaBox is designed to be low-complexity & based on local materials such as bamboo, netting and ropes - targeting ease of adoption and maintenance.
Through the design and implementation of the SeaBox we aim to deliver:
• Significantly higher m² productivity — early pilots show an order-of-magnitude jump in biomass versus long-lines.
• Climate-change & disease resilience — seedlings grow below heat spikes and salinity swings - keeping the seaweed healthier and potentially extending the productive season.
• Stronger, more consistent quality — by cultivating less stressed seaweed, with better access to nutrients in deeper water
• Restorative income model - by enabling IMT cultivation for improved water filtration, and shelter for juvenile fish and other marine life
• Better livelihoods & market supply - through more efficient, stable and higher-yielding methods improving incomes and market supply.
Current project status
We are in the process of field testing the V2 of the prototype in Sulawesi with local partner MARI Ocean, collecting insights on relative growth rates, quality (lab tested) and labour input, as well as environmental data.
Long-term aims
• Resilient, efficient farming for smallholders, year-round.
• Restorative livelihoods that ease pressure on over-fished stocks.
• Global empowerment— support wider adoption of seaweed cultivation as a restorative income model - also in areas without shallow water access
Collaboration is our model - so reach out if you are interested in partnering.
