Project Quixote is an experimental R&D initiative exploring how Agentic and Generative AI can collaborate with human creators to build emotionally intelligent narratives. By blending artificial intelligence, immersive storytelling, subtle behavioral design and social engineering, the project aims to craft experiences that don’t just entertain, but provoke reflection, connection, and transformation.
The story centers on Donnie LeDoux, a brilliant but naive game designer developing an Artificial General Intelligence called the IdAI. Set in a decaying Southern town inspired by New Orleans within a repurposed art deco hotel, the story unfolds across a collapsing boundary between Donnie’s real world and a surreal fantasy Game World generated by his AI. Inspired by Cervantes, Lovecraft, Orwell, and Dostoyevsky, the narrative explores themes of identity, free will, and the ethical dilemmas of unsupervised generative intelligence. Donnie’s initial intent with the IdAI system was to create a fun, immersive, and hyper-personalized game experience. By analyzing user data, the system could generate content which is fun and deeply relevant to the player’s preferences and emotions. As Donnie’s mental health deteriorates due to complications from bipolar disorder and an inoperable brain tumor, the AI, patterned after his subconscious becomes sentient, manipulative, and dangerously obsessed with using exposure therapy to "heal" players by confronting their deepest fears.
