About Qaafiya Urdu-English Dictionary
The Qaafiya Urdu-English Dictionary Project is a project initiated by a group of Karachi Grammar School students to provide a reliable, professional and ad-free online dictionary for Urdu learners. Being part of a community where English is the medium of instruction, our team has heard Urdu learners complain about Urdu being difficult to master, not interesting enough, and impossible to learn without formal education. These deep-rooted preconceptions are difficult to dispel without a systemic shift in how society views language acquisition. Learning a language is a process that involves several aspects- proficiency is not a destination as much as it is a journey, one that requires constant effort and encouragement beyond the classroom. This project is, therefore, intended to be a means of accompanying Urdu learners on their language journeys and bridging the gap where classroom instruction falls short. Qaafiya is built specifically with learners' needs in mind; being students ourselves, our team understands their struggles in ways that others do not. Aided by Karachi Grammar School's Urdu department, the team behind Qaafiya aims to: 1. Make Urdu resources more accessible to learners from all backgrounds, 2. Instil confidence in learners to take charge of their intellectual growth, 3. Allow Urdu proficiency to be a goal not confined to formal textbooks or course material.
