Queen’s Mostly Autonomous Sailboat Team (QMAST) is a student design team that designs and builds autonomous sailboats. It is a nearly completely student run club consisting of students from various faculties and disciplines. QMAST enables students to develop their knowledge through research and development stages.
To showcase the team’s talent and achievements, the boat is entered in annual competitions that test navigation, tactics and design. During the race, the boat must steer and trim sails based on measurements of the wind, position, and direction without human intervention. QMAST has attended various international design competitions and has been credited with various competition awards.
QMAST is the only educational initiative on campus that teaches marine architecture and one of the few teams that focuses on systems engineering. Members are also exposed to real-world problems, hands-on construction and project management experience, all of which are instrumental in finding employment after graduation. Some of the beneficial applications of the technology QMAST develops include autonomous vehicles, green transportation, alternatives to large-scale oceanographic research vessels, sailing safety, and ocean surveillance.
This past year the team worked towards building a new boat, electrical system and improving the software we had to compete in International Robotic Sailboat Regatta (IRSR) 2017 held at the United States Naval Academy.
