Traditional ICE based vehicle architecture does not comprehend the full benefits of Electric Vehicle (EV). In order to do so an axial-flux motor needs to be fitted inside the wheel (in-wheel/hub motors) to harness benefits like better efficiency, high regenerative braking, cabin optimisation, torque vectoring and parking assist. Needless to say there are some serious challenges to be met. Therefore, top automobile manufacturers are investing heavily in axial flux based R&D. Axial flux motors due to their inherent shape and advantages of better power to weight ratio are the perfect solution for the EVs. Axial flux motors are upto 7 times smaller in shape and weight when compared to radial flux motors. Therefore an axial flux motor in Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) or Synchronous or Synchronous Reluctance (SRM) offers perfect solutions to an in-wheel EV. Also, if an efficient solution can be worked around axial flux with high regenerative braking capabilities, the ranges of EVs may be doubled in city driving conditions ! Quanteon Powertrain has filed for a patent and developing axial flux motor with unique 95% regenerative braking. The start-up intends to offer powertrain solution to the automobile OEMs which includes enabling them to remove friction pads based brakes and gearbox with a simple axial-flux-in-wheel-motor-hub in each / part wheel of the EV for new (P4 level) or retro-fitment model.
