Development of disposable, low cost and accurate rapid tests for infectious diseases. Our TB Breathalyser is a proven disposable diagnostic device for screening of active infectious Tuberculosis (TB) in rural settings where resources are minimal. Over 50% of people tested for TB cannot easily produce sputum samples, the RBS TB Breathalyser is used to collect a cough sample and so it does not require a sputum sample. The TB Breathalyser has been successfully tested in field trials in India and Ethiopia, with sensitivity and specificity results >95%. The TB Breathalyser containing a patient's cough sample is inserted into the RBS portable, battery-operated optical reader to reach a result in 2 minutes. The reader uses standard optical componentry from a well-established supply chain to enable high volume manufacturing of this low cost TB diagnostic. The TB Breathalyser antigen test hardware and TB assay system are protected by patents which have been granted in many countries. The RBS bio-optical platform can be adapted for developing other rapid diagnostic tests including bovine TB testing on Farm.
