Reach to Read is non-profit organisation that raises funds to train Reading Mentors who are mostly retired school teachers and volunteers to assist Grade 1 - 3 learners who experience difficulty in learning to read. Reading Mentors are screened by the organisation and have to attend training workshops where facilitators teach them the techniques to use when teaching young learners to read. We reach out to especially retired teachers and anyone who has a passion for early childhood education to join our organisation. One-on-one Reading sessions are held after-school on school premises or at the community library on Saturday mornings. Parents are welcome to attend the Saturday classes where they are taught the basic techniques to practice with their children at home. Donations and funds raised are used to purchase books and stationery and to cover the travelling costs of the mentors and host the training workshops. Currently we only operate in the Western Cape and have partnered with 20 primary schools and 15 libraries in mostly poorer communities. We work with the educators at the schools who identify learners who will benefit from our programme. We aim to grow our network of Reading Mentors which will enable us reach out to and assist more learners.
