The project aims to promote a future targeted implementation of ecological restoration activities for degraded habitats along the Central European Green Belt (CE EGB) in the Interreg Central Europe programme area as important part of EU Green Infrastructure.
The European Green Belt forms a structurally rich bridge element connecting various valuable habitat types, which are of great importance in the role of natural carbon sinks for climate protection. However, challenging developments such as increasing land use and climate change are having a detrimental effect on, leading to a decline in biodiversity and habitat degradation within this ecological network. In response, the ReCo project aims to find innovative solutions to improve the protection and conservation of habitats along the CE EGB. In doing so, transnational cooperation is essential, as the EGB extends across several countries and since ecological interconnectivity does not end at national borders.
12 partners from six member states of the Interreg CE program are thus participating in the development of the new protection and conservation strategy. Restoration measures will help to improve ecological connectivity and thus support the biodiversity strategy of the EU. Six pilot regions, in which the restoration methods will be implemented, local, regional and national public authorities, sectoral agencies, infrastructure and (public) service providers, NGOs & higher education & research orgs. will benefit from project activities and results by gathering competences to promote biodiversity & connectivity of valuable habitats. The locally selected measures will be analysed with regard to their feasibility and their potential to improve the ecological status in other regions as well, and general policy and action recommendations will be formulated. In the final implementation phase of the project, the focus will be on the continuation of the results achieved at the local, regional and transnational level.
