Refasha Zanzibar is a social enterprise transforming the seaweed industry in Zanzibar by empowering local seaweed farmers and adding value to their harvest. While Zanzibar is the leading seaweed producer in Africa, 97% of its seaweed is exported as raw material, with only 3% processed locally. Refasha Zanzibar is determined to change this by equipping farmers, especially women, with farming and protective tools to enhance the quality of their seaweed and increase their income whilst also generating income for Refasha. We process Eucheuma cottonii seaweed, a unique species of seaweed in Zanzibar into natural cosmetic and health products, offering high-value skincare, hair care, and body care as our primary products. Additionally, we sell seaweed powder as a secondary product, which generates quick revenue to support operational costs. Our commitment to sustainability ensures that our products are eco-friendly, affordable, and beneficial to both local and international consumers.
