Refugee Support Devon (RSD) is an independent local charity set up in 2001 by volunteers concerned about the wellbeing of refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants living in Devon. Our services grew from the needs observed by these founding members – to provide immediate assistance in times of hardship and crisis, to ensure access to legal and specialist services to help with their status, security and welfare needs, to further education and employment opportunities for those able to, and to support integration within the community through awareness events and volunteering.
RSD remains committed to its mission, proudly adapting and responding quickly and effectively to the ever changing national and local context for refugees. Today’s clients (over 500 during the year 2023-24) present a wide range of issues, including financial emergencies, often due to the fact that many cannot access public funds; seeking legal advice and representation in a climate where such services are limited; and isolation and loneliness, especially
felt by asylum seekers living in temporary accommodation (often remotely situated) hotels.
