The proper disposal of lithium-ion batteries is a complex process that poses immense challenges for trade, municipalities and industry. Small businesses in particular often struggle to manage the consequences - not to mention the financial burden of complying with all the regulations. To store and transport faulty or critical lithium-ion batteries, REMONDIS Industrie Service GmbH & Co. KG has developed the RETRON system. This system is based on the ASP special waste container (waste collection container for pasty and solid substances) which was newly developed to deal with the dangers of battery fires. The resulting container is currently available in seven different sizes. The RETRON system is UN-approved and suitable for the transport of end-of-life, defective or critical lithium-ion batteries as well as new goods. The high-temperature resistant containers offer protection in the event of an accident. For example, they can withstand an internal temperature of 1,000°C for three days, while at the same time the external temperature will not exceed 100°C. In addition, all containers are stackable and have the option of connecting gas discharge systems. In 2019, RETRON was awarded the Danger/Goods Innovation Prize for the development of the above-mentioned system.
