2022 geopolitical tensions have demonstrated how some EU strategic sectors, such as the industry and agroindustry, are severely exposed to international disturbances in the energy market. These recent events have added pressure into the creation of a more resilient and independent EU energy market, starting by making these strategic sectors more self-sufficient and less dependent of the grid. Energy independence and security are becoming increasingly important for industrial production and manufacturing, as well as for tertiary buildings. The steady integration of renewables had been, until now, an effective way to increase energy stability in industry. However, the situation has changed, and now we need to assure that our industries receive affordable and stable energy. Our industrial independence has to be built as a combination of factors which includes grid adaptation, renewable generation, fuel switch, energy storage and energy efficiency.
