Have you ever felt like you’ve been living someone else’s life, reaching for someone else’s dreams, following a path someone else laid out for you? I did that for decades. Sometimes, it’s still hard not to fall back into that familiar thinking. Habits can take hold of us and keep us firmly rooted on the beaten path, even when we’re miserable. Because anything out of our comfort zone can look scary. In 2019, I was certified as a Life Coach, Master Trainer, and Group Leader by the Fowler International Academy of Professional Coaching. I’m also a Positive Intelligence Coach®. But even more importantly, I’ve qualified through life experiences. I went through an identity transformation of my own, and now I’m a proud “burnout” survivor—although I prefer to call myself a “stress manager.” I’m learning to deflect the sabotaging voices in my own mind before they can thwart my happiness, and every day, I get a little more proficient. I’m more productive, more content, and can communicate more effectively than ever before. Over the course of 33 years, I watched medicine go from humanity-driven to profit-driven. Not what I signed up for. I had defined myself as a physician, and it was hard to give myself permission to even look at other opportunities. But once I did, my world brightened. For sure, I’ll always be a doctor. But I learned that I’m so much more than that. And so are you.
