Indy is at a crossroads. The I-65/I-70 downtown Inner Loop highway is nearing the end of its functional life. INDOT is reconstructing the northeast interchange, known as the North Split. Soon, INDOT will have to develop plans to address the remaining legs of the Inner Loop. The future reconstruction of the Inner Loop is a once-in-lifetime opportunity to transform Indianapolis infrastructure and development for a more resilient, sustainable, equitable, and healthy urban core. The Lilly Endowment funded an extensive study that shows how recessing the rest of the Inner Loop (minus the North Split) can help achieve economic, environmental, equity, and health benefits not possible if the highway is rebuilt as is. Rethink is working to advise, educate, and engage leaders, decision-makers, and community stakeholders in visioning for what a better downtown highway system could mean for the City, the Region, and the State.
