RiadArchitecture provides architecture, master planning & interior design services internationally through our offices in Cairo & New York. Our award-winning work can be found in major metropolitan & rural areas around Egypt & the Middle East. We have worked on over 230 projects – 104 of which that have been built – with a portfolio including commercial office, banks, residential, hospitality & mixed-use projects. RiadArchitecture was founded in 1934 under the name & supervision of the late architect & former head of the Cairo Municipality, Mahmoud Riad (1905-1979), who was recognized as one of the pioneers of modern Egyptian Architecture by King Farouk, President Gamal Abd el Nasser, & President Anwar el Sadat. He was also among the first Egyptians to hold a degree in town & city planning from the University of Liverpool in 1931. He gained profound expertise working with Shreve, Lamb & Harmon on their Manhattan masterpieces, the Empire State Building & 500 Fifth Avenue, before returning to Egypt to establish his own practice. Under his leadership, the first Generation of RiadArchitecture was responsible of some of Cairo’s most iconic modern buildings, like the Arab League Headquarters, Nile Hilton, & the USSR Embassy. During the 1960s & 1970s, Mahmoud Riad was the consultant of the Ministry of Housing & Public Affairs in Kuwait & was invited to numerous UNESCO conferences pertaining to Third World Housing & Public Affairs The practice was later run by his sons, Ahmed Riad (1939-2007) & Mohamed Riad (1942-2021 ), & his grandsons Mahmoud M M Riad (1983- ) & Khaled Riad (1988 - ), who form the second & third generation of architects respectively. Prior to joining the family practice, Ahmed Riad gained experience with the Arab Office in Cairo; Mohamed Riad was a lead designer at the Development & Popular Housing Office in Cairo; Mahmoud M M Riad worked at Zaha Hadid Architects; and Khaled Riad was part of both the Ismail Leyva Architects & WeWork NY Offices.
