Το πρόβλημα που έρχεται να λύσει το RiceCube είναι αυτό της διαχείρισης των υπολειμμάτων των ορυζώνων από τους παραγωγούς, που κυρίως ενσωματώνονται στο έδαφος αυξάνοντας το κόστος της καλλιέργειας (καύσιμα, καταπόνηση των μηχανημάτων, εργατοώρες, αύξηση ασθενειών, μείωση παραγωγής, κόστος φυτοπροστασίας).
Το RiceCube θα υλοποιηθεί αξιοποιώντας τη γνώση που έχει αποκτηθεί από πρόσφατες έρευνες που αφορούν την ορυζοκαλλιέργεια. Η πρώτη φάση θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις εγκαταστάσεις του Ινστιτούτο Γενετικής Βελτίωσης και Φυτογενετικών πόρων (ΙΓΒΦΠ) σε συνεργασία με το Ινστιτούτο Εδαφοϋδατικών Πόρων (ΙΕΥΠ) του ΔΗΜΗΤΡΑ.
