RIICE (Remote sensing-based Information and Insurance for Crops in Emerging economies)

RIICE is a partnership that works with governments and farming aggregators to apply satellite technology in earth observation to better manage agricultural risks. The project engages with governments, insurance companies and multilateral organisations based in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam with a view to help them to make use of the latest application of yield and loss determination based on satellite technology. During recent-year loss events, the project partners and their governmental counterparts had been able to assess drought and flood damage and yield losses in India, Philippines and Thailand. With the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) as its main financial contributors, the core project partners of the public-private partnership are Allianz Re, Sarmap SA, GIZ and IRRI. RIICE has also formal ties with several research institutes in the current target countries, among them NIAPP (Hanoi), Cardi (Phnom Penh), GISTDA (Bangkok), PhilRice (Manila) and TNAU (Coimbatore).
