River Café, on Prince’s Island in downtown Calgary, is committed to serving regional, seasonal Canadian cuisine. A pioneer in the local food movement, River Café (circa 1991) is dedicated to featuring quality ingredients from local sustainable farms and gardens in Alberta. Currently sourcing from over 70 producers, River Café also grows a wide variety of herbs, flowers and greens on site in the restaurant’s edible garden. The resulting palate is a unique seasonal and regional ‘taste of place’ that highlights the geography of the land and the historical significance of indigenous ingredients. River Café was recently awarded Canada's Greenest Restaurant and Most Eco-Friendly Restaurant and ranked #42 in Canada's Best 100 Restaurants. Outstanding Chef 2014 and Best Restaurateur 2014 by the Terroir Awards for Excellence in Hospitality. The restaurant has received numerous accolades over the years for its commitment to regional cuisine in publications like Bon Appetit, Food Service & Hospitality, Gourmet and Enroute. River Café has won Tourism Calgary’s “Restaurant of the Year” and is a perennial winner in the Avenue Magazine Top 10 Restaurant Awards. River Café was the first restaurant in Alberta to adopt the Ocean Wise program and was instrumental in bringing the program to other Alberta restaurants. This commitment was recognized in 2009 with the Ocean Wise Sustainable Seafood Award.
