The Department of Economics at Ramakrishna Mission Residential College (Autonomous) was established in 1960 and has always been an Honours Department. It has seen a succession of dedicated full-time faculty members, including notable figures such as the late Brajanandan Sinha, who led the department for over three decades. Known for his simplicity, humility, and commitment, Sinha was a revered figure whose influence extended beyond the department to the entire college. The department also benefited greatly from the early contributions of faculty members like Rajendranath Chakraborty, Kalyan Chakraborty, and P. K. Roy. Over the years, several eminent guest lecturers, including Prof. Dhiresh Chandra Bhattacharya and Prof. Hirendranath Roy, have enriched the academic environment. Other guest teachers like Dr. Santanu Ghosh and Sri Gopal Trivedi have also made significant contributions. The department has organized seminars featuring lectures from distinguished economists such as Prof. Bhabatosh Datta, Prof. Mihir Rakshit, and Prof. Abhirup Sarkar. Among its alumni are notable individuals like Dr. Subal Kumbhakar, Sri Prabal K. Sen, and Dr. Raja Kali, who have achieved prominence in various fields. Sri Nimai De was the department’s first student to secure first-class marks in 1985, setting a precedent for future students. The department houses a well-equipped seminar library with over 1500 books and subscribes to journals like the Economic and Political Weekly, American Economic Review, Oxford Economic Papers, and the Economic Journal. The faculty and students continue to uphold the department’s tradition of academic excellence and dedication to the study of economics.
