Eradication of Leishmaniasis from Yemen Project
(ELYP)
To confront the dire need for an action to evoke an effective leishmaniasis surveillance and control, the ISD-Sponsored Community Dermatology Project ‘Eradication of Leishmaniasis from Yemen Project (ELYP)’ token place in January 2013, as the first and most effective community movement against leishmaniasis in the history of the disease in Yemen. ELYP has had many strategies to address and eradicate leishmaniasis from Yemen, support needy patients, and improve their lives. Bringing the global attention on the burden of leishmaniasis in Yemen and the issues of women and children were of its main objectives.
Aim
ELYP aimed to control and eradicate the neglected leishmaniasis disease from Yemen and the surrounding region, to assist those needy affected population (particularly, rural children and women), and to support research on leishmaniasis and its related factors.
Regional Leishmaniasis Control Center
(RLCC)
RLCC, a charitable NGO, was founded in April 2014 as the first phase of the ISD-supported Eradication of Leishmaniasis from Yemen Project (ELYP) by the Yemeni dermatologist ISD member Dr. Mohamed A. Al-Kamel, with a collaboration from the American Academy of Dermatology and the German dermatologist Dr. Luitgard Wiest. It currently has 4 regional centers and running 7 integrated programs. The Board of Trustees is its principal authority, and a wide network of volunteers execute its activities.
RLCC’s Board of Trustees is the principal authority of the foundation, and a widely growing network of volunteers, including physicians, scientists, technicians, health workers, community leaders, and patients support its integrated programs. RLCC aimed to fulfill and manage ELYP’s strategies and programs.
Seven Integrated Programs
The second phase of ELYP included the announcement of several integrated awareness raising, educational, surveillance, management, control and research programs.
