About Campaign For ROOH
The Roof Over Our Heads (ROOH) campaign emerged from conversations among women leaders in federations across SDI countries in Asia and Africa during the COVID lockdowns. Initially casual, these discussions identified five priority areas, one being 'A roof over our heads,' expressing security. Poor people's roofs, initially made from basic materials, become more durable as affordability and a sense of security grow. The campaign addresses the challenges posed by climate change, extreme weather events, and disasters, advocating for safer housing. Notably, the women emphasised that the composition of poor people's roofs often starts with basic materials and reused objects, but as financial capacity and a sense of security increase, investments in more durable roofing materials follow. In the face of changing climates and the heightened frequency of extreme weather events, traditional techniques and materials become insufficient in providing adequate security. In response to these challenges, women from SDI across Asia and Africa decided to launch the ROOH campaign. This initiative aims not only to secure physical shelter but also to address the broader implications of climate change, such as vulnerability mapping and community resilience. The campaign thus underscores the interconnectedness of housing, climate, and women's empowerment, framing 'A Roof Over Our Heads' as a comprehensive pursuit of safety and well-being.
