In January 2022, I started to work as a freelancer under the name Room 4 RAS, with the goal to help people make better decisions about RAS installations by using over 30 years of actual experience designing, installing and more importantly handling, operating and troubleshooting large scale RAS systems. As specialists in design and installation of self-cleaning-low maintenance Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR), our solutions aim to remove common problems in aquaculture such as: • Settlement of particles due to unfiltered faeces or uneaten feed that must be avoided in any RAS system as they can become potential disease reservoirs • Formation of hydrogen sulphide as consequence of anoxic sediment and its adverse effects as known causes of severe failures in important large scale RAS projects when working with seawater • Blockages of biomedia in faulty hydraulics designs Our tailor-made solutions are based on: • Combining different aeration systems with correct MBBR water inlet and water outlet hydraulics design in order to: - Keep the biofilter in perfect conditions to sustain the development of beneficial bacteria as well as to remove the heterotrophic bacteria competition from the equation - Promote chaotic biomedia movement from the very bottom to the surface to support keeping the MBBR tank floor and walls clean to help in avoiding potential areas of sedimentation - Avoid accumulation and blockages of biomedia in certain areas of the MBBR ensuring a more even distribution of the material all over the tank and therefore better biofilter performance • Implementing a MBBR bypass system that gives flexibility to carry out maintenance tasks or therapeutical treatments In addition to the above, we also offer consultancy due to our comprehensive RAS design know-how, with special insight on the system general hydraulics layout and calculations aiming to optimise and improve the system cleanliness and energy efficiency.
