About Room To Operate
Room to Operate is a campaign for inclusive surgical wear—because no one should have to compromise their identity, comfort, or professionalism to scrub in. We’re addressing a gap that’s been ignored for too long: standard surgical hats don’t fit everyone, especially those with braids, afros, locs, twists, or extensions. The result? Exclusion, discomfort, and a message that some bodies still aren’t fully welcome in clinical spaces. Our mission is to: Advocate for theatre gear that accommodates all hairstyles and head sizes. Elevate the voices of surgeons, students, and staff affected by this issue. Collaborate with hospitals, suppliers, and policymakers to change what "standard fit" really means. Whether you're a med student, scrub nurse, consultant, policymaker—or just someone who believes inclusion should be built into the uniform—we’re glad you’re here. It’s time to make space in the theatre. We’re fit to operate.
