About Return to Work in Atlantic Canada's Marine Sector

We are Memorial University researchers studying return to work after injury/illness among Atlantic Canada marine workers. Our project is called “Return to Work After Injury or Illness: Challenges for Marine Workers in Atlantic Canada.” This research project received funding Future Ocean and Coastal Infrastructures (FOCI), an Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) project. Research funding was provided by OFI, through an award from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund. www.fociresearch.ca/work-package-8 RESEARCH TEAM: Dr. Kim Cullen Dr. Desai Shan Dr. Contessa Small Robert Ndum RESEARCH AIMS: Our focus is on the challenges experienced by these workers with returning to work after injury/illness, including the things that helped or hindered their return. WHAT YOU ARE BEING INVITED TO DO IN THIS STUDY: If you decide to volunteer, you will be asked to complete an online survey that is completed anonymously. You will be asked questions about: • your experience of getting injured or being made ill by your work; • your experience with compensation or insurance benefits related to this injury/illness; • whether/how you returned to work; • your return-to-work experience; • any impacts on home and family associated with your time off work, accessing medical treatments and other injury/illness-related issues; • and, some demographic questions. The survey will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. Following the survey, you will be given the opportunity to volunteer for a follow-up interview. Participation is not a requirement of the organization(s) and/or union(s) distributing information about the survey on our behalf.
