During their time in the Bahamas of the 1970s, the Aitken family fell in love with the island of Rum Cay, captivated by its stunning beauty and storied past.
Originally called Mamana, the island earned its new name, Rum Cay, after a shipwreck off its coast. When rum barrels from the wreck washed ashore, both sailors and locals acquired a taste for the spirit, forever transforming the island’s identity.
While in the Bahamas the Aitken family learned that some things in life unfold, others we craft. With a fresh perspective, the family returned to Scotland to craft their own story and as a reminder of the lessons they learned in the Bahamas, they built and named their house Rum Cay.
Rum Cay became a place which captured the spirit of our family, our values, and our memories. With those lessons in hand, we’ve made the story of Rum Cay our own, continuing the journey. Taking our heritage and embracing the values of Rum Cay we have combined Bahamian spice with Scottish spirit to create Rum Cay Rum.
