Rural Refugee Network (RRN) was set up as a charity in 2016 by a group of volunteers with the express aim of taking practical, positive action in response to the refugee crisis that was developing at that time and as a direct consequence of the war in Syria. RRN now supports refugees and asylum seekers living in Hampshire who have come from many countries including Afghanistan, Sudan, Syria and Ukraine. Our trained community volunteers support individuals and families transition to independence by building their understanding of life in the UK and providing them with practical support, housing and other identified needs. For those we help, we offer ESOL classes, careers' advice, training support and, where necessary, support to develop a sense of belonging through nurturing social connections and community engagement. Our South Downs Youth Discovery Project (SDYDP) helps young, unaccompanied asylum seekers through regular outings and activities in the countryside. These help them build their confidence, make friends, practice English, and learn about life in the UK. RRN has one permanent member of staff, who heads up the charity as the CEO, a committed Board of Trustees and a network of other volunteers who deliver RRN’s various programmes of support. Our team comes from a cross section of society and include senior leaders from health and social care, finance, business, education, law, the media, creative industries and the charity sector. In 2024 we were awarded a National Lottery award from the National Lottery Community Fund. This generous support is enabling us to expand our impact and engagement with young unaccompanied asylum seekers through the SDYDP. This represents a significant step in our development as a small charity and allows us to expand on the work we do providing effective, practical help for those who have come to the UK seeking sanctuary. RRN is a registered charity (charitable number 1165796)
