Rusinga Festival is one of the most significant cultural celebrations in Kenya offering; music, fashion, film, food, artistry, literature, sports and games, tours, education and conversations that take you back in time into the wealth of the Suba Culture.
As a result of assimilation by the Luo, the Suba culture has been under pressure and the language is now listed in UNESCO's Red Book of Endangered Languages (2003)
The 12th Edition of Rusinga Cultural Festival happens in December 2023; Rusinga Island, Homa Bay County.
The last 11 years have seen tremendous growth of Rusinga Festival; opening up the Lake Region to cultural tourism and related economic activities, empowerment of women and local community through small businesses during the festival, promotion of literacy and life skills through the island reading series and the cultural reflections, promotion of the arts and culture industry, promotion of social change activities that have impacted the HIV/AIDS and related conversations in the island, and above all resuscitation of the endangered Suba culture and heritage.
#RusingaFestival is also an experience for goers and a pride of identity for the community.
