RW CINE

The production company RW CINE, founded in 1979 by environmental journalist Paula Saldanha and biologist Roberto Werneck, is a pioneer in the independent production of socio-environmental documentaries in Brazil, with 50 years of experience on Brazilian TV. In 1990, the couple's son, Pedro S. Werneck, began to accompany the field documentation. Continuing his parents' work, Pedro began to direct the production company and TV series, starting in 2000. In his film Paixão de Documentar (2002), Pedro pays tribute to Paula and Roberto's 25 years of work. RW CINE's productions address environmental, cultural and social issues, valuing Brazil's ethno-biodiversity. The medium-length films Amazônia and Pantanal, produced in the early 1980s, and the series Globinho Repórter (shown on TV Globo, 1979) mark the beginning of the documentary work. Since 1987, RW CINE has produced a series of Special Reports for the program Fantástico (TV Globo). The series Terra Azul, from 1989, presents documentaries addressing environmental issues, and was shown on TV Manchete. In a second phase, new special reports were created and shown on Fantástico, from 1990 to 1992 – these and other reports were presented at the official Exhibition of the Brazilian Government, at Rio 92 – UN Conference on Environment and Development. In 1995, Expedições began – an award-winning series shown on TV Cultura and, for 2 decades, on TV Brasil (also on TV 5 and Globoplay). Series of documentaries produced by RW CINE have been shown on the main Brazilian TV networks and more recent productions, by Pedro S Werneck, have been broadcast on TV Globo, ZDF, RTS and TF1. Awarded here and abroad, RW CINE's works are part of the Collection of almost half a century of documentation of Brazil and its populations – it is the memory of Brazilian audiovisual for future generations.
