The pilot ladder is an important element in the Pilot/ personnel Transfer arrangement (PTA) used by ships' crews to embark and disembark large ocean-going ships, results in many fatalities and accidents worldwide. The design and construction of the ladder – which is specified by international regulation – hasn’t changed for hundreds of years. IMU joins hands with AIMPA to further bring in awareness on Pilot ladder safety and is looking at tapping young minds to suggest alternatives to the Pilot ladder design, pilot boarding arrangements, and Pilot ladder securing arrangements, to mitigate the risk of life in boarding the vessel.
