The Safety Assessment of Non-Electric uses of Nuclear Energy (SANE) project focuses on exploring the potential of non-electric applications of nuclear energy and their associated safety aspects. The project examines both reactors designed for non-electric uses and the risks associated with these applications. Since many of these technologies are novel, it is essential to effectively communicate their benefits and risks to a wide range of stakeholders, including risk communication strategies.
Non-electric uses of nuclear energy have been identified as a key research priority within the EU SMR pre-Partnership, with a focus on the integration of nuclear energy into various end-use applications. SANE aims to review potential future applications of nuclear energy, whether retrofitted to existing power plants or implemented in novel reactors. The project also includes a study on risk communication in abnormal situations, inspired by events in Ukraine during Russia's invasion.
