About Stronger Than Sarcopenia
Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle mass and strength, associated with age and decreased activity. It can cause difficulty walking or standing up from sitting positions, which can lead to falls and fractures. In fact, immobility is a major contributor to developing sarcopenia, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made staying mobile that much harder. The good news is sarcopenia is easy to treat and prevent. When our muscles weaken, we can do less, struggle to do what we once could, and may become unsteady on our feet. Physical inactivity, functional changes associated with aging, hormone changes that affect muscle mass, and changes in the body’s ability to absorb protein all contribute to the onset of sarcopenia. Small dietary adjustments and strength & resistance training can prevent sarcopenia, treat muscle loss, increase strength, and improve mobility. The Office on Women's Health, under the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, provides national leadership and coordination to improve the health of women and girls through policy, education, and model programs.
