SarGone makes a machine for removing seaweed (sargassum) before it hits shorelines.
What is sargassum?
- It's seaweed that usually collects in the Sargasso Sea (Bermuda Triangle). In recent years, more sargassum is blooming due to excess nutrients in the water and higher ocean temperatures. Strong winds have been blowing it ashore in recent years.
Why clean up the sargassum?
- A 7ft deep blob of seaweed chokes out native marine life
- Sargassum outgasses hydrogen sulfide and arsenic as it decomposes. This causes respiratory issues.
- Bacteria that break down sargassum in the water exhausts dissolved oxygen, leaving dead zones where fish can no longer breathe.
- Sargassum gives people rashes on contact.
