As my engineering career developed I worked at several companies on steep growth paths as was the oil industry they were supplying with equipment and services. With that rapid growth there was little time to develop the processes and procedures that helped departments do their jobs to supply the customer with what they actually wanted. Shortly I found that the Engineering skill sets that I had developed for learning new ideas, adapting equipment and processes to improve these missing processes and equipment, was more interesting than a typical design engineering day. I was introduced to the world of Lean Manufacturing through a course at the IMTS in Chicago nearly 20 years ago. By learning about the basis of Process Flow Mapping, Defining current and future states, the 8 Deadly Wastes and how to use KPI’s to track the progress, I found my calling. As my career, and training progressed and I was introduced to more small to mid sized companies and realized many companies need this type of knowledge. I have introduced the Lean Improvement ideas to all the companies I have worked with and watched the growth occur. I have seen my past staff grow their own careers - many still reaching out to me to spitball issues, or suggestions or to meet and discuss their current struggles looking for improvement ideas.
