In this year-long, student-directed program, Schnitzer Cares groups act as "mini-foundations." Students begin the year by selecting a community issue or service area they feel passionately about. Groups are guaranteed $7,500 from The CARE Foundation for their grantmaking and can double those funds by raising an additional $750, which CARE matches 10:1, up to a maximum gift of $15,000. Students spend the rest of the school year completing the grantmaking process – learning more about their service area, evaluating grant proposals, meeting with representatives from nonprofit organizations that have applied for funding, and deciding which to fund.
