Tradition and modernity are rarely linked as closely as in the Pontifical Swiss Guard. The Guard has been protecting the Pope and his residence since 1506 and that has not changed to this day. However, the methods of fulfilling orders and the environment in which the guardsmen operate have changed. In the traditional Renaissance uniform there is a young, modern and well-educated Swiss man. Even today, he shares with the 16th century mercenary the firm conviction that the Church of Jesus Christ and the Successor of Peter deserve to be advocated for, if necessary with one's own life.
