SEAwise

SEAwise is an international project and dynamic #research programme aimed at understanding the current state-of-play of #fisheries #management and helping implement Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management #EBFM across Europe. The project involves 24 partner institutions, across 12 European countries. Through a targeted programme of interdisciplinary research, together with the input of key fisheries stakeholders, we are working to deliver a fully operational EBFM tool to facilitate practical application of EBFM. SEAwise’s research is rooted in four regional case studies spanning small- and large-scale #pelagic and #demersal fisheries in the: #MediterraneanSea #WesternWaters #NorthSea #BalticSea Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management (EBFM): is an approach to fisheries management that recognises the need to consider the social and economic benefits arising from fisheries (such as food provision, employment, and cultural heritage) as well as the impacts they have on the #environment, and seeks to balance these. While the benefits of EBFM are widely recognised, SEAwise is working to identify and address challenges which currently pose a barrier to its effective uptake across Europe. Combining existing research with a fresh approach and new knowledge base, SEAwise will look to produce relevant, informed, and ready-for uptake advice.
