SECDI is a niche services provider that adds value primarily to the mining industry by providing specialised safety engineering competence development programs, advisory services and information sharing events. We believe that knowledge is useful, even more so is the insightful application thereof – that is powerful. At SECDI we are passionate about two things. The first is sharing knowledge and competence building, bridging the gap between knowledge and application. The second is safe mining operations. We have come to believe that with some fundamental paradigm shifts, new techniques and the use of technology, mining operations can become fundamentally safe operations. Safety engineering is an existing, niche engineering discipline, that focuses on ”engineered systems”, from a safety point of view. Safety engineering is linked to industrial engineering, systems engineering and safety analysis. Safety engineering is well matured in other industries such as petro-chemical, aviation and nuclear. With the strengthening of the mining industries’ focus on the importance of hazards and controls, control focused risk management is becoming a practice that is more widely applied. It is within this context that the importance of safety engineering will add value. Mines are complex socio technical systems – therefore mines should be “engineered systems”. Consequently, safety engineering has to be a key focus, for mines in the future.
