Prior to 2016, the preventive use of poison in rattraps was the standard method for combatting rat infestations. Unfortunately, utilising poisonous materials has negative environmental impacts as the poison spreads through and builds up in the food chain causing the deaths of protected species. Therefore, in 2016 the EU banned the preventive use of poison in rattraps. Now poison can only be used if rats have been identified and detected. As a result of the 2016 legislation, the pest control industry has had to restructure its services and now uses bait traps and the regular (monthly/quarterly) manual inspections of rattraps. However, carrying out scheduled manual inspections can result in rodents invading undetected in the periods between visits. This may lead to a significant delay in any extermination measures that need to be implemented and leave customers with a greater risk of a rat infestation. With manual inspections, the company has a greater risk of rat infestations, which could result in substantial financial and reputational losses.
