The Sensory Smart Store is run by Mel Thomsett in the New Forest, Hampshire.
Mel is mum to Archie who was diagnosed with Autism at age 2 years and 9 months.
Archie insisted on having all the labels cut out of his clothing and could only tolerate certain fabrics and soft seams .
After researching Sensory Processing Disorders and getting some help from an Occupational Therapist, Mel realised that some of his mysterious behaviour was his way of trying to cope. He wasn't displaying challenging behaviours for 'no reason', he was being challenged by sensory issues.....big difference!
Socks were a serious bone of contention and he went mostly barefoot for almost 2 years. It’s almost unimaginable to most people not to be able to put socks on your child, but that’s the conundrum that Mel was faced with a few years ago until the discovery of the SmartKnitKids Absolutely Seamless Socks range.
Her journey inspired her to open the Sensory Smart Store to bring solutions to anyone trying to navigate family life with a sensory processing disorder in the mix and to help other kids struggling with sensitivities to seams, labels, fabrics and textures.
