THE STORY
Originally, The Shaka Gallery was established in 2015, in a converted garage at famed surf spot on Cloud 9, Siargao Island in the Philippines. Purposed to sell Surf photography and bring the community together. Shaka established itself as the best go-to pre & post surf breakfast and coffee on the island.
After 6 months and no photography sales but with lines out the door for the famous smoothie bowls the founders decided to sell off their photography gear and buy more blenders! Expanding the brand into Bohol and extending the menu to focus on fresh and healthy food, establishing what is now SHAKA!
SHAKA MEANING
With SHAKA's roots sprouting in the surfing community of Siargao, “Shaka” is a Hawaiian hand gesture for “hang loose” to signify taking it easy and communicate friendliness. The name also references the plant-based and health focus of the brand with“Shaka-hari” being an ancient Sanskrit translation for “Vegetarian Food. We take on the connotations of both references to create our version of SHAKA”.
THE INSPIRATION
The inspiration was influenced by traveling around the world and also the environment of Melbourne and growing up in the F&B scene.
The ideas took off from Melbourne for the best coffee and brunch scene in the world, Brazil’s simplicity of the açaí bowl, and the vibes & charm of the Philippine islands!
THE GOAL
SHAKA was born with a desire to make a change, a desire to leave a positive impact on our people and communities, allowing them to experience “healthy eating” whilst promoting enviromental sustainability. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring, far from it, and should be a holistic approach that’s a lifestyle, not a diet and means doing our part for a healthier planet too.
THE FUTURE
We want to expand our tribe, be known for the best experience and take on the giants with a global ambition. As they say, be the change you want in the world.
