The Story of “Shariah Audit” – How It Began and What Its Purpose Is The story began with my journey in studying jurisprudence (fiqh) and accounting, where I noticed significant differences in terminology and concepts between the two. After more than 15 years of deep study in both fields, and having spent 15 years moving between different types of companies and diverse institutions across various sectors, I introduced myself to the public as a content creator and a zakat accountant for businesses. And that’s when the shock began! Yes, a shock! Or, if you prefer, a mark left! I started to realize that the issue was not just with zakat, but my eyes were opened to a range of forbidden transactions practiced by companies without a reference or someone to correct them. From the establishment of companies to their liquidation, from profit distribution to relationships with partners, investors, banks, customers, suppliers, and employees. I then began discussing these matters with companies, explaining that there should be a specialized department to review financial transactions and monitor compliance with Shariah law, without excess or negligence (Shariah Audit Department). By the grace of Allah, I was able to coin a new, simple term that resonated with people and was suitable for everyone, which I called “Shariah Audit.” To be fair, many companies and institutions expressed their eagerness and joy over this idea, and I was flooded with questions and inquiries about this field. One of the most prominent questions was: “Is there anyone else in this field besides you?” And here came the second shock… Or, if you prefer, the second mark! I responded, “How can there be no one else when I am the product of my teachers? There are teachers behind the scenes who taught generations and contributed to the foundation of this financial industry. They tackled contemporary issues and refined them according to Shariah perspectives.
