Many companies such as Google, Facebook and IBM have a special interest in artificial intelligence. A.I. is the attempt to replicate the ability to perceive, understand and predict how the world works in another entity, which is not human such as a machine. The reason for this is that A.I. has many applications in problem solving and is already delivering results such as the defeat of the best chess player Garry Kasparov in 1997 by IBM’s Deep Blue or in the cybersecurity industry with the Negative Selection Algorithm (NSA), which is used to protect digital systems from foreign threats. A.I. is a new topic, which will be used in every single discipline in the future and even in disciplines where one might not consider A.I to have a role, such as modeling the 3D structure of proteins in biochemistry. In fact A.I is likely to supersede human input into these topics in the not too distant future. The Sheffield Artificial Intelligence Society (SAIS) seeks to introduce students to AI and familiarize them with the topic through talks, presentations, tutorials and project as AI becomes dominant in the work place.
