About The Society of Indonesian Environmental Journalists | SIEJ
The Society of Indonesian Environmental Journalists (SIEJ) was declared by 45 journalists on April 22, 2006, coinciding with the commemoration of Earth Day. Currently, SIEJ has more than 250 members, who are active journalists based in 26 provinces. The main mission of SIEJ is to build a network of journalists and media to encourage critical and honest coverage of environmental issues. SIEJ takes the position as an educational forum for environmental journalists in Indonesia. In that position, SIEJ becomes a forum for journalists to improve their skills and knowledge on environmental issues. SIEJ implements programs such as training, workshops, fellowships, and mentoring to achieve its vision. In addition, SIEJ also serves as a bridge (hub) for NGO networks, academics, youths movement, and civil society. SIEJ is actively disseminating and promoting research results by various institutions to journalists. Over the past few years, SIEJ has also been active in creating environmental-specific campaigns and educational content on various platforms. In 2014, SIEJ also launched ekuatorial.com, an online Indonesian environmental news website. Ekuatorial.com publishes environmental news, especially those relating to the six main topics: deforestation, maritime ecosystem, biodiversity, forests and land fires, energy, and natural disasters. The news stories published on this site are sourced from correspondents, syndication networks, and other content providers, including articles that have been published in other media outlets. ekuatorial.com is an alternative environmental media for member and non-member journalists, especially for independent journalists (freelancers). Through ekuatorial.com, SIEJ provides channels and story grants for environmental journalism.
