About Smart Infrastructure Management Systems (SIMS)

Smart Infrastructure Management Systems (SIMS) is a leading research laboratory dedicated to providing innovative solutions for the sustainable management of infrastructure assets. Located in Hong Kong, SIMS collaborates with industry partners and academic institutions to address some of the world's most pressing challenges in infrastructure management, thereby contributing to a sustainable future. Founded by Professor Dr. Tarek Zayed, SIMS operates within the Department of Building and Real Estate at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Under Prof. Zayed's leadership, the laboratory comprises a diverse team of over 30 professionals, including postdoctoral researchers, research associates, and graduate students pursuing Ph.D. and M.S. degrees. Equipped with state-of-the-art technologies such as laser scanners (LS), infrared thermography (IRT) cameras, ground-penetrating radars (GPR), water leak sensors, SewerBatt, sewer overflow sensors, as well as robotics and drones, SIMS is at the forefront of infrastructure research. The laboratory has the honor of collaborating with various Hong Kong government departments, including the Highways Department, Water Supplies Department (WSD), Drainage Services Department (DSD), Transport Department, and Building Department, to deliver comprehensive inspections, analyses, and smart solutions. Our latest projects include a smart water leak detection and localization system, a smart bridge inspection system, real-time defects monitoring during transportation of modular integrated construction (MIC), an autonomous defects monitoring robot for concrete structures, and an autonomous MIC crane monitoring system. Beyond traditional infrastructure, SIMS's expertise extends to diverse industries, including inspection and decision support systems for water and sewer systems, oil and gas pipelines, buildings, bridges, and tunnels.
