A skunks works (also known as Skunk Works) is widely used in business, engineering, and technical fields to describe a small group of people who work on a project in an unconventional way within an organisation given a high degree of autonomy and unhampered by bureaucracy, tasked with working on advanced or secret projects.
The group's purpose is to develop something quickly with minimal management constraints. Skunks Works are often used to initially roll out a product or service that thereafter will be developed according to usual business processes.
Like the company Lockheed-Martin where the term Skunk Works originated from who built the SR-71 Blackbird over 50 yrs ago they said it couldn’t be done.
The head engineer in fact said when your pushing the boundaries on something that not been done before you need at least one miracle but in building the SR-71 it was all miracles.
Skunks Works is working on a number of stealth projects which are going to push beyond the boundaries of what possible.
